Two T-shirts can both read 100% cotton on the label and behave like different garments after a month of wear. One keeps a smooth face and a little body; the other goes fuzzy across the shoulders, thins at the hem, and starts looking tired long before it wears through anywhere. Shoppers tend to blame the price, the brand, or a hot wash. The more likely culprit is a measurement the cotton trade records on every single bale and almost no clothing label repeats: how long the individual fibers are.
Cotton is not one fiber length. It is a spread of lengths, sorted and priced by that spread before a mill ever spins it, and where a batch falls on the scale shapes how the finished cloth feels and how long it keeps its surface. The figure never reaches a hangtag. The consequences of it reach your closet anyway.
One plant name, two different fibers
Most cotton in ordinary clothing is Upland cotton. A much smaller share is extra-long staple cotton, sold in the United States as American Pima. The US Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service sets out the split in its cotton sector overview: Upland is roughly 97 percent of American production, with fibers about one inch to one and a quarter inches long, while Pima is around 3 percent, with fibers of one and three-eighths inches or longer.
That is the difference in one sentence. Both are cotton. Both are honestly labeled cotton. And the fiber inside one can be a third longer than the fiber inside the other, which is enough to change the yarn, the surface, and the way the garment ages. Longer fiber is scarcer and takes more care to grow, so it costs more, and the premium behind an extra-long staple shirt is a real material difference rather than an invented one.
Graders count cotton length in thirty-seconds of an inch
Before cotton reaches a spinner it gets classed. Samples from each bale go to a government classing office, where instruments record color, leaf, strength, fineness, and length. Keith Edmisten's cotton classification guide for NC State Extension walks through the record field by field, and two details in it matter to anyone buying clothes. The instrument measures fiber length in hundredths of an inch, then reports it in both hundredths and thirty-seconds. And a separate one-digit code on the same record says whether the bale is Upland or Pima.
So the trade has a precise vocabulary for length that the retail side simply drops. The same guide warns growers away from low staple length because short cotton is hard to sell. By the time that cotton is a shirt on a rail, the only number left is a price.

Where short fiber shows up in a finished shirt
A yarn is a bundle of overlapping fibers held together by twist. Longer fibers overlap more, grip each other over more of their length, and leave fewer loose ends standing up out of the yarn surface. Shorter fibers need more twist to hold at all, and every fiber that is too short to be gripped properly eventually works its way to the outside. That single mechanical fact explains most of what people notice about cheap cotton.
- Surface fuzz arrives early. Loose fiber ends migrate out, catch on themselves, and roll into the small balls people call pilling, usually first where a bag strap or an arm rubs.
- Smoothness is a length effect. The slick, cool hand of a good poplin comes partly from fewer protruding ends, not only from finishing chemistry that washes out.
- Thin spots follow the fuzz. Fiber leaving the yarn is fiber leaving the garment, so a fabric that sheds heavily gets lighter and looser in the areas that rub most.
- Fine and strong go together. Long fiber lets a mill spin a finer yarn that still holds up, which is why very light shirting in a durable weave tends to sit at the expensive end.
Length claims that are marketing, not measurement
Fiber-content rules require a label to name the fiber and give percentages. They do not require the length of that fiber, and nothing stops a brand from filling the gap with words instead. Three kinds of claim show up most often, and only one of them points at a measurement.
Country names are the weakest. Egyptian cotton names a place that grows a range of cotton, including celebrated extra-long staple varieties and plenty of ordinary shorter fiber, so the phrase on its own tells you geography rather than grade. Trade names are stronger, because a licensed name such as Supima is tied specifically to American Pima and can be pulled if the fiber is not that. Processing words sit in the middle: combed cotton has had its shortest fibers mechanically removed before spinning, which raises the average length in the yarn, and ring-spun describes a method that generally handles longer fiber into a smoother yarn than the faster rotor method used for commodity knits.
How to judge length when nobody prints it
You are not going to measure fiber in a shop, but you can read the evidence a garment leaves on its own surface. Four habits get most of the way there.
- Look at the fabric edge-on, not face-on. Tilt the cloth against a light and watch the silhouette: a visible halo of standing fibers is short cotton announcing itself before you have paid for it.
- Rub a hidden seam allowance hard. Twenty seconds of friction inside a hem does roughly what a season of wear does, and cloth that fuzzes under your thumb will fuzz on your shoulder.
- Read the descriptive words as a ranked list. Extra-long staple and Pima beat combed, combed beats ring-spun alone, and ring-spun beats a description that mentions no process at all.
- Judge a new brand on one wash cycle, not one wear. Buy a single piece, wash it four or five times the way you actually wash, and look at the shoulders and the seat before you commit to a second.
Make length part of your next cotton buy
The habit to build is small: before paying a premium for anything cotton, ask what the brand is willing to say about the fiber, and treat silence as information. A shirt that names Pima, extra-long staple, or combed yarn is telling you where it sits on a scale that graders measure to a thirty-second of an inch. A shirt at the same price that names nothing may still be good, but it has given you no reason to expect it to keep its face through a year of Tuesdays.
Try it on the garment you replace most often. Take the shirt or the tee you have already replaced twice, look at where it failed, and check whether the failure was a hole or a haze of fuzz. Holes are a construction and abrasion story. Haze is a length story, and it is the one you can shop your way out of by paying attention to a number the label leaves off.
