Two shirts hang on the same rack, both cut for a 40 inch chest, and one of them pulls across the back while the other has room to spare. Nothing is wrong with either tag. The number describes the body the shirt was drafted for, not the shirt itself, and the distance between those two figures has a name that almost never appears on a hangtag.
That distance is called ease, and it is the largest reason garments built from the same measurement chart end up feeling nothing alike. Once you can see it, a lot of confusing fitting-room moments stop being mysterious. You are usually not stuck between sizes. You are looking at two patterns that made different decisions about how much air to leave around you.
The gap between your body and the cloth
Ease is the difference between a body measurement and the finished measurement of the garment that goes over it. If your chest measures 40 inches and a buttoned shirt measures 43 inches around, that shirt carries three inches of ease. Some gap has to exist. Cloth with no room at all would sit flat against skin and give you nowhere to breathe, bend, or reach for a shelf.
New Mexico State University Extension states it plainly in its fitting guide Pattern Alteration (Guide C-228, revised 2015): a pattern sized for a 36 inch bust may include 2.5 inches of ease, which makes the pattern itself measure 38.5 inches. Two separate facts are in play at every purchase, and only one of them tends to reach the label you actually read.
Two kinds of ease do two different jobs
Wearing ease is the functional allowance. It exists so your ribs can expand, your arms can cross, and your seat can land in a chair without the seams taking the strain. It is a small number, usually a couple of inches around the widest points, and a garment cut with too little of it will feel fine standing still in a mirror and hostile ten minutes later at a desk.
Design ease is the stylistic allowance on top of that. A boxy overshirt with eight or ten inches of room over the chest is not a drafting error, it is the whole point of the garment. The trouble starts when a shopper reads that volume as the wrong size and orders down, ending up with something that has lost its intended shape without gaining a better fit.
Why a size chart cannot answer this on its own
Standardized sizing tables describe bodies, not clothes. ASTM International publishes D5585-21, Standard Tables of Body Measurements for Adult Female Misses Figure Type, and its scope says the plain part out loud: although these are body measurements, they can be used as a baseline in designing apparel when a maker also accounts for fabric type, ease for body movement, styling, and fit.
Read that carefully and the everyday confusion resolves itself. Two companies can work from the identical reference table, apply different ease, and ship garments that differ by several inches in the same labeled size. Neither one broke a rule. The chart was never the finished product, it was the starting point each brand builds away from in its own direction.
The number that would actually help you is the finished garment measurement, and a growing number of retailers publish it beside the body chart. Where it exists, use it. It is the only figure on the page that describes the object arriving in the box.

Ease amounts vary by brand, market, and decade, so treat the ranges below as a way to calibrate your eye rather than a rule anyone enforces. What matters is noticing that these are choices along a spectrum, not accidents.

Measuring the ease you already like
You do not need pattern-making skill for this, only the garment you reach for most and a soft tape. The piece that already fits is carrying your preferred allowance, and turning that preference into a written number makes every future order less of a guess.
- Lay the garment flat and fastened. Smooth it without stretching, so the fabric sits the way it hangs on a hanger.
- Measure straight across, an inch below the armhole. That line is the chest measurement of the garment, and doubling it gives the full circumference.
- Subtract your own chest or bust measurement. What remains is the ease you have already decided you like, in inches.
- Note the garment type beside the number. Your preferred allowance for a jacket and for a summer shirt will not be the same figure.
- Compare that number to published finished measurements. When a retailer lists them, you can predict the fit before anything ships.
Where stretch changes the arithmetic
Everything above assumes a woven fabric that holds its shape. Add elastane or a knit structure and the math inverts, because a stretch garment can be drafted smaller than the body and still go on comfortably. That is negative ease, and it is why a jersey top measuring 36 inches can fit a 38 inch chest without complaint.
Recovery is the catch. A knit that stretches easily but returns slowly will read as a good fit in the shop and as a baggy one by evening, so the same measurement can behave in two ways across a single day. A rigid weave has no such flexibility to borrow. If a woven shirt measures a half inch smaller than your body, it will simply not close, and no amount of wearing it in will change that.
Bring the number to your next alteration
Before your next trip to a tailor, measure the jacket or trousers you already like and write down how much room they carry, then bring that figure with you. Asking for two inches through the waist rather than asking for something slimmer turns a vague request into an instruction, and it gives the person holding the pins a target you have already tested on your own body.
