A houndstooth jacket looks lively in the fitting room mirror, two feet from your face. Someone photographs you across a restaurant table and the jacket has turned into flat grey wool. Nothing faded and nothing washed out. The pattern simply got smaller than the eye could separate at that distance, so the black and white blurred into a single tone.
This is the part of styling that is closer to arithmetic than taste. A pattern is not one thing, it is a thing that changes identity with distance, and the size of its repeat decides at what point it stops being a pattern and becomes a texture or a solid. Knowing where that switch happens tells you which two patterns can share an outfit and which will fight.
The eye has a hard floor for fine detail
There is a measured limit on how small a detail your eye can resolve, and it has been written into clinical practice since 1862, when the Dutch ophthalmologist Herman Snellen described the letter chart still used in eye exams. Reference material on visual acuity assessment explains the standard: a person with 20/20 sight can separate two objects that sit one minute of arc apart, which is one sixtieth of a degree.
Below that angle, two neighbouring details do not become fuzzy versions of themselves. They merge. Your eye reports the average of the two, which is why a fine black and white weave reports as grey rather than as a soft check. The cloth did not change. The information stopped arriving.
Cycles per degree, translated into millimetres
The angle is easier to use once you convert it to something you can hold a ruler against. One degree of visual angle covers about 52 millimetres at three metres, roughly the distance across a dinner table or an office desk. One minute of arc at that distance is therefore just under a millimetre.
A pattern needs two elements to exist, one light and one dark, so the smallest repeat that can still register as a pattern at three metres is close to 1.7 millimetres, and that is a ceiling reached only in good light with strong contrast. Step back to six metres, the width of a living room, and the same repeat needs about 3.5 millimetres. Walk in to arm's length and a repeat under a millimetre is still legible.
That arithmetic explains a very common purchase regret. Fine end-on-end shirting, tight birdseye suiting, and narrow pinstripes are chosen up close, where the pattern is doing visible work, then worn at conversation distance where it has collapsed into a plain colour. The garment is not disappointing. It was judged at the wrong distance.
The loudest patterns sit in the middle of the range
Detail does not simply fade out as it gets finer. Vision has a peak, and patterns sized near it hit harder than anything larger or smaller. The Webvision chapter on visual acuity describes measuring pattern vision in cycles per degree, where one cycle is a light bar plus a dark bar, and notes that in bright light contrast sensitivity peaks around 5 to 10 cycles per degree, with the upper limit of resolution near 50 to 60.
Convert the peak to a tape measure at three metres and it lands on repeats of roughly 5 to 10 millimetres. A small gingham, a pin dot, a fine houndstooth: these are the patterns that read as busiest across a table, because they sit exactly where the eye is most sensitive. The upper resolution limit lands near one millimetre at the same distance, which is where a pattern quietly becomes a colour.
Low contrast shrinks a pattern before distance does
Scale is only half the story, because the eye needs contrast to resolve fine detail at all. Resolution reaches its published maximum only in high contrast conditions, which is why eye charts are black on white. Lower the contrast and the fine end of the range drops out first.
In practice, that means two versions of the same cloth behave like different fabrics. A navy on navy herringbone with a 4 millimetre repeat may read as plain navy from a metre away, while the same weave in black on cream still reads clearly as a pattern from across a room. If you want a pattern to be visible at distance, you are shopping for contrast and scale together, not for one of them.
Pattern sizes and the distance they survive
Measuring the repeat is a five second job. Put a ruler on the cloth and find the distance from the start of one motif to the start of the next, then match it to the band below.

Two patterns, one outfit, one rule of thumb
Pattern mixing usually fails for a reason that has nothing to do with colour. Two patterns of similar repeat size compete for the same slot in your vision, so the eye cannot decide which one is the background. A 6 millimetre check under a 7 millimetre stripe produces a shimmering, restless look that reads as an accident even when the colours agree.
The working fix is a gap in scale rather than a gap in colour. Aim for one pattern at least three times the repeat of the other, so the smaller one falls back into texture while the larger one carries the outfit. A fine 2 millimetre shirting under a 25 millimetre window pane jacket works because at normal viewing distance the shirt is functioning as a solid.
The same logic sorts out accessories. A tie or scarf sits in a small area, so a large repeat gets cropped and looks like a fragment, while a fine repeat vanishes into a plain block. Mid-scale motifs are the safe choice on small items precisely because they hold their identity at the distance people see them from.
Measure the repeat before your next patterned buy
Take one action next time you shop for anything printed or woven. Measure the repeat in millimetres, then walk three metres back from a mirror and look again, or have a photo taken from that distance. If the pattern has become a tone, you are buying a colour and should judge it as one. If it has held, you are buying a pattern and need to check what else in your closet it can sit beside.
Do this a few times and you build a small internal library: the shirt that behaves as pale blue at a meeting, the jacket that stays a check on video calls, the scarf that keeps its shape at arm's length. That library is more useful than any rule about mixing prints, because it is measured in the distances you actually get looked at from.
