You build an outfit around one idea. A rust knit against olive trousers, or a burgundy scarf picked up from a thread in a green check. It works in the mirror, it works in the photo you take of it, and it works for most of the people who see it. For a predictable share of the room, the two colors sit at roughly the same lightness and land in the same confused zone, so the whole point of the outfit is a pairing they cannot resolve.
This is not a rare edge case and it is not a reason to dress in grey. It is a plain fact about who looks at clothes, and once you know which pairings are fragile you can keep the ones you like and give them a second channel to travel on.
The number behind the phrase one in twelve
The National Eye Institute's page on color blindness states that about 1 in 12 men have color vision deficiency, and that men have a much higher risk than women. It also notes that most people who have it were born with it, which is why the figure holds steady across age groups rather than climbing.

Among populations with Northern European ancestry, red-green defects occur in about 1 in 12 males and 1 in 200 females, and the same source says red-green defects have a lower incidence in almost all other populations studied. So the share of any given room depends on who is in it, and the ratio between men and women is wide.
Put a rough figure on a mixed gathering of thirty adults in a Northern European or North American setting and you land somewhere around one or two people. Not a majority, and not nobody. It is about the same odds as any single guest being left-handed, which is a thing most hosts already account for without thinking of it as accommodation.
Red and green is the common case, but not the only one
The eye institute describes three groups. The most common makes it hard to tell the difference between red and green. Another makes blue and yellow look the same. In rare cases a person has complete color vision deficiency and sees no color at all.
Those three are nothing like equally weighted. Not every combination is at risk, and the fragile ones follow a pattern. Trouble arrives when two colors sit close together in lightness and differ mainly along the red-green axis. Push them apart in lightness and most of them recover.

Lightness is the channel everyone shares
Every model of color pulls apart into roughly the same components, and lightness is the one that does not depend on which cone types are doing the work. That gives you a reliable rule. If an outfit reads correctly in black and white, it reads correctly for everybody.
Two other channels come free with clothing and are easy to forget. Texture is one: a ribbed knit against a smooth twill announces itself as two different things whatever the dye is doing. Pattern is the other, since a stripe or a check declares a boundary that no color confusion can erase. A wardrobe leaning on lightness, texture, and pattern has three ways to make a point, and hue becomes the fourth rather than the only one.
This is also why the advice costs nothing. You are not being asked to drop a color, only to stop loading the entire idea of an outfit onto a distinction that some viewers do not receive.
A quick test you can run on your own outfits
Four checks, none longer than a minute. Run them on the two or three combinations you wear most rather than auditing a whole closet.
- Photograph the outfit and convert it to black and white. Every phone does this in the editing screen. It does not simulate anyone's vision, but it answers the one question that matters: does this still work when hue stops helping.
- Look for panels that merge. If a jacket and a trouser fuse into one shape in the grey version, the outfit is running on hue alone and will read differently to different people.
- Check the small pieces separately. Accessories are where deliberate color lives, so a scarf or a belt chosen to echo one thread in a pattern is exactly the kind of choice that goes unseen.
- Repeat it under a warm bulb. Low, warm indoor light pulls saturation out of everything and stacks a second problem on the first, which is why evening rooms are where these pairings usually fail.
Dress so the outfit does not depend on one distinction
Take the combination you reach for most often and give it a second channel this week. If it is built on two colors of similar depth, move one of them two steps lighter or darker and wear it that way twice. If the colors are the point and you do not want to touch them, put a texture change or a pattern between them so the boundary is visible without any help from hue.
Then leave the rest alone. This is not a rule that should shrink a palette, and an outfit failing the grey test is not a mistake, only a piece of information about how widely it lands.
