Every time you clean the lint screen after a load, you are looking at your wardrobe in miniature. That grey mat is not dust from the air or residue from detergent. It is fiber pulled straight off the clothes that just went around the drum, and it never grows back. The wash usually gets blamed for wearing clothes out, but the drying step is often the harder one, and the lint trap is the receipt.
Most people treat washing and drying as one chore with two machines, and assume the water and detergent do the damage. The tumbling and heat of a dryer put more mechanical and thermal stress on fabric than a wash cycle does, and the proof piles up in the filter after every single load. That lint trap is a pile of your clothing
Lint is shed fiber, and shed fiber is loss you cannot reverse. The garment does not wear out all at once, it leaves gradually, a filter's worth at a time.

Why drying is harder on fabric than washing
A wash cycle moves clothes through water, which cushions them and lets fibers slide past each other. A dryer does the opposite. It lifts the clothes and drops them repeatedly against the drum and against each other while hot air blows through, so the fabric is flexing, rubbing, and drying out all at the same time. That combination is what loosens fibers at the surface and sends them to the filter.

What the heat actually does
Heat does its own damage on top of the tumbling. High temperatures relax and weaken many fibers while they are being flexed, which is why hot drying is the main cause of shrinkage and of the gradual stiffening you see in some synthetics. Elastic fibers suffer the most, because the heat breaks down the stretch that makes waistbands, activewear, and sock cuffs hold their shape.
This is also why clothes often come out of a hot dryer looking slightly older than they did going in. Colors dull a little faster, prints crack sooner, and edges fray earlier, all because the same heat that dries the water is also cooking the fabric. Turning the temperature down, even without air drying at all, removes a large part of that stress.

Not everything suffers equally, and knowing the order helps you decide what to pull out. The biggest losers are stretchy and delicate items, loose knits, and anything you want to keep looking new for years. Sturdy plain cottons sit at the other end and handle the machine with far less complaint.

Lower-heat habits that add up
You do not have to give up the dryer to slow this down. Most of the benefit comes from lowering heat and shortening time rather than abandoning the machine, and a few habits make the difference without turning laundry into a project.
- Use a lower heat setting by default. Medium or low dries clothes with far less thermal stress, at the cost of a little extra time.
- Pull clothes out slightly damp. Over-drying is where much of the stiffening and shrinkage happens, so stop the cycle before everything is bone dry.
- Air dry the fragile things. Hang activewear, knits, and anything with stretch, since these lose the most and dry quickly on a rack anyway.
- Do not overload the drum. A packed dryer tumbles unevenly and runs longer, which means more rubbing and more time under heat.
- Clean the lint screen every load. A clogged screen makes the dryer run hotter and longer, adding to both the fiber loss and the fire risk.
- Throw the lint in the bin, not the sink. Rinsing the filter sends the fibers into the water system, which the PLoS One study flagged as an avoidable pollution path.
When the dryer is still the right call
None of this means air drying everything. A dryer sanitizes, softens sturdy cottons, and is genuinely more practical for towels, sheets, and plain everyday basics that shrug off the heat. The goal is to match the method to the garment, not to treat the machine as either always good or always harmful.
Think of the dryer as a tool with a cost attached to each use. For a sturdy set of sheets that cost barely registers; for a favorite sweater or a pair of leggings it adds up fast. Spending the machine's wear on the clothes that can take it, and sparing the ones that cannot, is the whole idea.
A drying routine that keeps clothes longer
Start with your next load by sorting one step further than usual. Before the wet clothes go in, pull out anything stretchy, delicate, or knit and lay it on a rack, then run the rest on medium heat and stop it while the load is just short of fully dry. That one change spares your most vulnerable pieces and eases the heat on everything else.
Over a year, those small choices are what separate clothes that stay looking new from clothes that quietly thin and sag. The wash will always take some of the credit and some of the blame, but the dryer is where a lot of a garment's life is decided, one lint screen at a time.
